Why Some Relationships Feel Addictive: The Psychology of Attraction and Manipulation – Webcast

Why can some relationships feel so compelling, even when we recognize that something isn’t right?

In this conversation with Chelsey Brooke Cole on the Restoring Resilience podcast, we discuss the psychology behind intense attraction, manipulation, and the personality traits that can make certain relationships particularly difficult to navigate.

The discussion examines what I describe as the “social cocaine” effect, in which charm, attention, and excitement can create a powerful sense of attraction that may obscure concerning behavior.

Drawing on my research into the Dark Triad, I explain the differences between narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, and explore how these traits can influence relationships. He also discusses *emophilia*, the tendency to fall in love quickly and easily, and why this can sometimes increase vulnerability to manipulation.

The conversation offers practical insights into recognizing unhealthy patterns, understanding the dynamics behind intense attraction, and responding with greater clarity. Daniel also introduces his CBR approach: Cool, Bottom Line, Rational.
